Ruth DeWitt-Bukater

Born: 2/2/1870, Wenham, Kentwood
Mother: Anne Brownell DeWitt*, Edith Hatch DeWitt    * Died in childbirth
Father: Jonathan Lind DeWitt

Born in 1870, to Jonathan and Anne, Ruth never knew her birth mother, due to her death in childbirth. Jonathan, whom did not want Ruth to be without a mother, met Edith Hatch in April of 1870. Due to the war in the United States that began in February of that year, Ruth was placed in the care of the Morrow family, whom lived next door. Edith and John conceived during their courtship, and after they were married, it was announced that she was pregnant. Ruth's half sister, Lizbeth, was born on January 2nd, 1871. Ruth's relationship with her stepmother became strained on several occasions, one such incident sent Ruth to a children's  psychiatric hospital for a month.

Ruth's education was one of the best. She graduated from Dummerston Girl's School in 1887 at the age of 17. She met and was engaged to Peter B. Creedon Junior late in 1887. They married on January 6, 1888. The marriage however did not last long. They divorced on 11/24.1889. The next month, she became engaged to Samuel A. Bukater. They married on 3/14/1890 in Newport. Due to Samuel's high position in the Navy, they lived in Philadelphia. It was there in 1894 that they conceived. Nine months later, Rose and Emily were born. Due to the pressure of having to raise two children, Ruth asked her friend, Victoria, in a letter if she would like to adopt Emily as her own. Victoria said yes, and on 3/19/1895, Emily's custody was given over to Victoria.

Like her previous marriage, this one was fraught with problems. Twice, Samuel threatened divorce, however their marital problems worked themselves out.
